Successful digital learning goes beyond introducing new technology—it ensures educators have the skills, confidence, and tools to use that technology effectively.
In our latest Strategic Pro Bono engagement, Team4Tech connected employee volunteers from Logitech with our Uganda-based nonprofit partner Far Away Friends to support teachers and strengthen digital learning.
Expanding Educational Access in Uganda
In rural Uganda, nearly 75% of children face barriers to quality education, and fewer than 10% of schools are equipped with functioning computer labs, despite the population of over 15 million school-going children. Far Away Friends is working against these odds to end generational poverty in the Amolatar region of Northern Uganda through education, healthcare, digital literacy, and economic opportunity.
Far Away Friends established a model school, Global Leaders Primary School, in 2016, providing direct access to high-quality education for 500 students per year from pre-k through 7th grade with the help of over 30 local teachers and school support staff. This also includes access to safe housing, daily meals, and mentorship.
Team4Tech has partnered with Far Away Friends since 2022, supporting the development of their first computer lab and helping Far Away Friends become the first school in their district offering computer literacy education to students at the primary school level. Participation in Team4Tech peer learning cohorts and access to tools and resources through Team4Tech’s Community of Practice has supported Far Away Friends in building digital literacy strategies, gaining exposure to global best practices, and building capacity for staff. One-on-one coaching through our Regional Hub has enhanced implementation strategies and helped Far Away Friends identify opportunities for skilled volunteer support.
Building on concepts developed during an earlier Design for Impact Workshop, Team4Tech guided volunteers through ten weeks of virtual collaboration, refining those initial ideas into practical solutions.
Working in two project teams, volunteers addressed different but interconnected challenges:
- helping teachers build confidence with digital tools
- creating a reliable platform for accessing and managing educational resources in low-connectivity environments
Even when schools have access to technology, teachers often need additional support to feel comfortable incorporating it into their classrooms. Limited technical experience, scarce training resources, and minimal IT support can all slow digital adoption.
To address these challenges, one volunteer team developed a collection of practical resources that help teachers build digital skills at their own pace while encouraging ongoing learning.
Their deliverables included:
- A Teacher Starter Kit featuring simple, visual guides for foundational computer skills
- A Journey to Digital Champion framework that breaks learning into manageable milestones over six months
- A peer-to-peer support model that encourages experienced teachers to mentor their colleagues
- A certificate and recognition program that celebrates progress and motivates continued learning
Rather than relying on one-time training sessions, these resources provide Far Away Friends with a sustainable approach that supports teachers as they continue developing their digital confidence.

Designing a Learning Platform for Offline Environments
A second volunteer team concentrated on making digital resources more accessible for teachers working in schools with unreliable internet access.
After evaluating existing technologies and gathering input from Far Away Friends, the team developed a prototype Digital Learning Hub built on the open-source Kolibri platform. The solution was intentionally designed with an offline-first approach, allowing teachers to continue teaching and collaborating regardless of internet availability.
Key features include:
- Uploading and organizing teaching resources
- Synchronizing content across devices over a local network
- Tracking curriculum progress
- An intuitive interface designed for users with varying levels of digital literacy
Throughout the project, teachers and school leaders provided feedback that shaped the platform’s development. Early testing confirmed the usability of the prototype while also generating valuable ideas for future enhancements.
Developing the Digital Learning Hub was an unforgettable experience. I loved bringing my skills to a project with clear, immediate impact, but even more, I loved the process of aligning with our partner to build what they actually needed. Complementary Solutions with Lasting Impact
Although each team worked on a different challenge, their solutions reinforce one another.
The Teacher Adoption resources equip educators with the skills and confidence to use digital tools effectively, while the Digital Learning Hub provides a practical environment where those skills can be put into practice. Together, these deliverables help create a stronger foundation for digital teaching and learning at Far Away Friends’ Global Leaders School.

By combining practical training, peer support, and accessible technology, Far Away Friends is better positioned to help teachers integrate digital learning into everyday classroom practice, creating lasting benefits for educators and students alike.
From Ideas to Implementation
One of the greatest strengths of this Strategic Pro Bono engagement was its ability to build on earlier work. Volunteers took concepts initially explored during the Design for Impact Workshop and expanded, refined, and transformed them into actionable solutions that Far Away Friends can continue developing and implementing.
The project also demonstrates the power of deep collaboration between nonprofit organizations and skilled volunteers. Through close partnership, iterative feedback, and shared expertise, Logitech volunteers helped create resources designed not only to address today’s challenges but also to support long-term digital learning goals.
