Earlier this month, Team4Tech launched the third and final cohort of our Implementing Generative AI in Education peer learning cohort. This four-month blended learning program will engage 40 participants representing 10 NGOs from 7 countries across Africa in strengthening teaching and learning with responsible AI integration.
Implementing Generative AI in Education
One of our most impactful AI capacity-building initiatives to date, Implementing Generative AI in Education is a three-year project (2024-2027) that equips education-focused NGOs with the skills, knowledge, and targeted support to apply generative AI in ways that are responsible, evidence-aligned, and grounded in effective teaching and learning practices.
With funding from the Ezrah Charitable Trust, this work supports three annual cohorts of 10 Africa-based NGOs with expert AI training, coaching, grant funding, and technology tools. NGOs develop their own AI implementation plans over the course of the cohort. After the cohort, they receive an implementation grant and ongoing coaching from Team4Tech experts in the region.
Previous cohort graduates have shared success stories including:
- Zimbabwe Information and Technology Center has become a leading example of responsible AI adoption, using its cohort experience to strengthen AI literacy, responsible use guidance, and training for teachers, learners, caregivers, and community members. ZITEC’s work has been internationally recognized, including first prize at UNESCO’s Global Forum on the Ethics of AI, and the organization has contributed to national-level AI conversations in Zimbabwe.
- Rising Hope Girls’ Education Foundation (RHGE) joined Team4Tech’s AI capacity-building cohort to promote responsible AI use with teachers. During the cohort, RHGE built and piloted ReadBuddy, a low-bandwidth, voice-based AI reading companion powered by GPT-3.5 that supports early-grade literacy; the innovation helped 200 teachers cut administrative task time in half and earned RHGE the 2026 AI for the People Prize at ITU’s AI for Good Global Summit in Geneva.
- Funda Wande in South Africa enhanced its existing teacher-support WhatsApp chatbot during the cohort layering in GenAI to help deliver structured, evidence-based support to teachers at scale. FundAi WhatsApp helps educators with lesson plans, literacy strategies, and course guidance. The tool builds on Funda Wande’s government-partnered model and its support to South Africa’s Department of Basic Education’s Read to Lead campaign.

What Comes Next
Through a blended learning approach that combines self-paced learning, live sessions, peer feedback, and direct coaching, participants will spend the next four months:
- Identifying foundational concepts of AI
- Assessing how AI can support education and examining use cases for integrating AI to support educational goals
- Building an understanding of how quality prompts are constructed
- Developing and finalizing a mission-aligned plan for implementing and sustaining AI tools in their educational programs
- Exploring strategies for scaling their AI solutions and creating training plans for staff and educators that ensure effective and responsible AI use that supports teaching and learning
