Education Access in Uganda with the S.O.U.L. Foundation
Lack of Education Access in Uganda
Uganda is one of the youngest countries globally, with 78% of the population under the age of 30. Less than 10% complete secondary school. In districts where the S.O.U.L. Foundation works near the industrial hub of Jinga, there is potential for meaningful employment. Still, most youth will continue to remain in informal jobs because they do not have the skills to keep up with the changing nature of work. Further, there are few resources for skill development to improve education access in Uganda.
The S.O.U.L. Foundation Supports Digital Skill Training
Many youths have no technology skills because their schools do not have computer labs. S.O.U.L. has a holistic approach to addressing the challenges that youth and adult learners face by providing them opportunities to thrive inside and out of the classroom. S.O.U.L. particularly recognizes the need to work in line with Uganda’s I.C.T. (Information and Computer Technology) Development Agenda, realizing its potential to boost productivity and create better jobs in the private sector, including informal businesses for youth in rural communities. S.O.U.L.’s two in-house technology labs have, in effect, enabled over 1,300 community youth to access I.C.T. training for the past seven years.
Team4Tech Partners to Set Up an I.C.T. Hub
Over the next six years, S.O.U.L. will expand on its existing program and aim to reach over 2,500 adult learners. They will particularly focus on reaching rural women who have historically been excluded from technology access and training. By setting up an “I.C.T. Hub,” S.O.U.L. aims to become an interactive and collaborative space for community members to learn and upskill. This space will provide opportunities to become self-sufficient. In sum, Team4Tech will play an integral role in supporting S.O.U.L. Foundation with technology and training, assisting with the digitization of curriculum, and improved program tracking systems.
