Supporting Digital Reading in Ghana with Worldreader

Worldreader Addresses Child Literacy Rates

53 percent of children in low- and middle-income countries cannot read and understand a simple story by the end of primary school. The Covid-19 pandemic has further worsened educational inequalities worldwide. Worldreader is a nonprofit organization that brings high-quality, affordable digital learning to children and youth in under-resourced communities. Team4Tech is partnering to support their initiative that focuses on reading in Ghana.

Access to E-Readers and Digital Learning

Using low-cost digital technology, Worldreader serves readers throughout the Global South. It helps them select and read digital books using mobile phones, e-readers, and tablets. However, technology and content alone aren’t enough to support the work of educators and the needs of children. So, activities accompany these books the books to further promote learning.

Team4Tech’s Partnership to Impact Reading in Ghana

Team4Tech is supporting Worldreader as they develop and deliver a replicable, systems-level approach to improving student reading behaviors and literacy outcomes. This project first will bring e-readers to primary schools in Kwaebibirem, Ghana. Next, Team4Tech is helping to build the capacity of the district education office and teachers to effectively use digital reading in the classroom. Overall, training students on how to use e-readers will improve the quality of education and instruction for primary school students on a large scale. In addition to the direct impact for learners and the community in the Kwaebibirem district, the project has the potential to scale to additional geographies in the future.
