Building Technology Integration Skills for Teachers in South Africa
Goal: Further train teachers in two schools in the Kayamandi Township on implementing technology into their curriculum.
Background: The Kayamandi Township near Stellenbosch, is located 20 miles outside of Cape Town, South Africa. Kayamandi’s 35,000 residents live in an area of informal housing and historically have had low economic and educational opportunities.
Partner: In April 2018, Team4Tech volunteers from Adobe and Cadence Design Systems continued the work started by previous Team4Tech volunteer groups – the most recent of which being a team from both Adobe and Autodesk.
Project: In this fourth project in partnership with the Greater Stellenbosch Development Trust, a nonprofit organization that aims to bridge material and cultural divides, volunteers:
- Expanded on previous training designed to deepen teachers’ digital literacy skills and increase their ability to build 21st century skills in their students through ed tech integration in the classrooms.
- Led professional development training and coaching sessions with teachers, suggesting and modelling more project-based activities in the newly reorganized 21st Century Learning Lab. By integrating such activities into daily instruction, the teachers will foster 21st century skills in their students.
- Helped Makupula Secondary School in its capacity as a Western Cape eLearning Game Changer Enhanced School to showcase its integration of technology into their curriculum for other regional schools and educational organizations.
